Volkswagen Beetle (99 - 11)
The older Beetle was one of Volkswagen’s most popular cars. It was in direct competition with the likes of the Ford Fiesta, but it managed to remain prominent in the supermini segment. With its ageless and retro appearance, the Beetle is reliable and practical. There’s a decent amount of space in the cabin. Leg/head room is good out front and there’s a fairly big boot for luggage. In terms of design, the cabin has withstood the test of time. There’s plenty of standard spec and it is easy to use. Watch out for some handy storage slots all over the cabin. One of the main reasons for the Beetle’s popularity (aside from being a low-cost motor) is the fact that it is simple and fun to drive. You’ll notice the sharp steering, small turning circle, and positive gear-shift.

• Make sure it all works as it can be somewhat troublesome

• There’s a good level of standard kit and safety kit on board
• It handles well; the steering is sharp and it’s fun to drive

• Decent space in the cabin and a good size boot

• The leg room in the rear of the cabin could do with being a bit bigger
